SBHG News – Easter 2024
What a busy few weeks we’ve had in community life!
We’ve hardly stopped! There’s been so much going on since Community Cash when four young men received their investment to set up a gardening business. We understand they’ve had their first happy customer too. We look forward to hearing more about what they’ve been up to at the next community cash on the 5th June from 6.30-8pm. Please do come along either with an idea or to listen and support the good ideas presented.
On Saturday 16th March Vicky hosted her monthly sewing group where they made peg bags. She’s back on the 20th April, again from 1-3pm and then again on the 18th May from 1-3pm. Keep your eye out for some clothes upcycling workshops that Vicky, Sammie and Gina have been hatching.
Ellie started her monthly Writing Circle on the 17th March and she’ll be around again on the 21st April from 1-3pm. She’s a published author and is bringing another author with her this weekend.
We learned we’d secured some funding from Wigan Council to enable the Conversational English classes to continue which is brilliant news. They take place every Tuesday from 10-11.30.
We launched the family savings club so that families can save a bit of cash to spend on summer activities or keep it in the bank until Christmas. If you’d like to join you can follow this link.
We had some relaxing times in Community Corner and people enjoyed Sound Baths with Jo. And, Yoga with Lynn started in April.
We had a great time in the Easter holidays despite the weather. We took a trip to the panto in Bolton in the first week.
In the second week the Playbox returned, thanks to Emma for the gift and to two of our Cllrs Sheila and Dave for paying for the haulage costs. We started to design our permanent Playbox whilst having a great play. We’ve still a bit of cash to raise, or skills and resources to find, but with a community like ours we are sure we’ll do it. Do come along to the meetings or suggest any ideas that you may have to making the Playbox a reality and show children that they can make changes to the place in which they live. The next meeting is on Monday 22nd April from 4-5.30pm at St Annes Community Centre.
We hosted our first Clothes Swap / Share. An idea hatched by Irene which a good few members of the community got behind, cooking soup, helping with the day and even offering a personal shopper service! No doubt we’ll be able to spot our old clothes walking around the community on other peoples bodies! It’s great to recycle and rewear, way too much gets wasted and thrown away these days.
We also planned the launch of the private members lottery. The lottery pot will be split equally between a lucky winner and community good causes. Another way to keep our money going round and round in the community. You can join as a member here if you want to take part, or pick up a form from CommUnity Corner. We’re going to draw the first lottery at the end of May. Already we’ve 50 people signed up so theres a cash pot of at least £250 to share.
If you’re interested in knowing more about the behind the scenes work of the community group and are thinking you might like to get more involved yourself then the Annual General meeting is on Sat 11th May. We’ve also the annual community party planned for the 29th June.
And Ey Up, Ey Up is back. We didn’t secure the Awards for All cash to pay for it and so Northern Heart and Soul CiC have sponsored this edition, with money they receive from Lankelly Chase Foundation. The business sponsorship has contributed too. We’re hoping to start delivery in mid May and will shortly be working out delivery routes and asking for help to deliver. An amazing 50 people helped out with the last edition. We wonder how many neighbours will get involved this time!
